Website Localization and Translation

You’ve built your website, slaved over the navigation, the copy and the payment procedure.

You’ve also tried to ensure your site is the most visited on the planet.

But, even though you can ship your products anywhere in the world, all your orders are coming from the UK or the US. You’ve checked and you come in first position on the search engines in every country.

So where are your orders?

The answer’s simple. To sell in foreign markets you need to speak in their language. So, although your customers can find your website, they can’t understand your offer, so they use a local site.

Let’s look at a few statistics:

  • Web users are four times more likely to purchase from a site that communicates in the customer's language (www.idc.com).
  • Over 100 million people access the Internet in a language other than English.
  • Over 50% of Web Users speak a native language other than English (www.glreach.com).
  • Visitors stay for twice as long (Site stickiness is doubled), if a website is in their own language (Forrester Research).

Pain free website translation

I’m sure you already realise how many more satisfied customers you’d have and how much money you could add to your bottom line by having your website translated, that’s why you’re reading this.

We do the hard work, you take the glory.

You’ve quite rightly already spent your time and money on constructing your website. You don’t want to spend loads more time giving the site back to your developers and hoping they can get your website translation right.

All you need to do is pass us the source files. We’ll translate them and pass them back, ready for you to upload them to the internet and quite rightly take all the glory for having your website successfully translated.

Translation and localization

Our translators will then work directly on these files and ensure that not only are the pages translated accurately but that all the content is localised as well. Having the pages localised is something that is really best left to our in-country translators. They know the local customers and will ensure that your translated website really speaks to your target country.

Here is a very simple example of localization in English you can have for free:

Where do you find out what you’ve already selected when shopping online?

  • U.S.A. – Shopping Cart
  • UK – Shopping Basket

This simple difference can make or break a sale, this is where using computer translation won’t help you, but professional translation will.

What file types can you work with?

Websites use vast numbers of documents in lots of different file types. To enable us to translate your website we just need the source files. We’ve not found anything yet which we can’t handle, but there’s always a first time. Here is a list of the most common ones.

  • HTML
  • XHTML
  • XML
  • JAVA
  • FLASH
  • CSS
  • ASP

Once our work is complete we’ll pass you back your finished translated website, ready for you to upload as your truly localised website.

Your website translation will be carried out by qualified translators in your given field, who also have experience of marketing, to ensure that all of your key messages are not lost in the process.

Once translated, we can help you bring visitors to your web site. We offer multilingual website promotion services.

Translation, when marketing your message matters

Speaking the right language

You’ve spent years honing your brand, ensuring the features and benefits of your products and services meet the exact requirements of your customers. The last thing you need is to ruin all that hard work by having your adverts, brochures, websites, press releases or emails badly translated

It’s funny when other people get translation wrong...

And it’s not just the little people who get ‘Lost in Translation’, here are a few examples of the big boys getting things disastrously wrong:

  • When Kentucky Fried Chicken translated their slogan " Finger lickin' good" into Chinese, it came out as "Eat your fingers off"
  • In Italy, a campaign for "Schweppes Tonic Water" translated the name into " Schweppes Toilet Water"!
  • When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" in Spanish means " it won't go"

...we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen to you

You’ve got to admit that they are funny, but you don’t want to be the one to be laughed at. So, ensuring your marketing material is translated accurately is critical - not just for your company, or your clients, it’s vital for your career.

To avoid mis-translation, we only use qualified in-country translators. They know the local market and its customs which ensures that your adverts and promotions have the desired effect when localised into your target language.

Ensuring your message is understood

Translation in itself is not always the answer to your language requirements, in particular where marketing or creative material is concerned. When copy needs to be adapted so it feels as if it has been written specifically for a market, or key phrases such as a play on words or alliteration need to be maintained, literal translation is not the answer.

We pride ourselves on overcoming all of these problems through using the correct processes right from the start:

Your country managers are involved from the start in selecting the right style and voice of translation and direct liaison is maintained on an ongoing basis if that’s what you need.

Only translators with previous creative expertise within your industry will be used, this ensures the creative elements of the original copy are not lost in translation and your translated documents returned the way you need them.

We’ll build a database of agreed company and industry terminology to ensure consistency throughout your documents.

Our teams of page layout specialists take your DTP files and put the translated copy into your layout.

We can work with all the current industry standard software on Macintosh and PC:

  • QuarkXpress
  • InDesign
  • Pagemaker
  • Framemaker
  • Microsoft Publisher
  • Powerpoint
  • Freehand
  • Illustrator
  • Photoshop

Using translation in multinational public relation

The whole world’s a stage now and any company who is serious about being a world player has to manage their public image globally. You need to keep a tight reign on your PR messages at the best of times so when they are translated into other languages you need a translation company you can trust.

Terminology and glossaries

Every industry and subject has its own specific terminology and getting this right is vital to ensuring the right messages are conveyed in your press releases. Our project managers will work with you to ensure that our translators use the correct terms and descriptions in your press releases. This set up phase will ensure that all ongoing translations are of a very high quality and that they can be delivered to you to hit your deadlines.

Translation Memory to save you time and money

As you have more and more documents translated we will be building your translation memory. Translation memory works by “remembering” passages of translated text in your press announcements and offering those translations to the translator when it sees a good match. This software increases the accuracy and speed of translation and because the translator doesn’t have to translate passages twice, just check the accuracy of the context, reduces the price as well.

This cuts down the need for translations to be moved around via email and because it’s online you can access it wherever you are in the world at any time. Translation for Publishing

Using a translator to suit your style

Translation for publishing is all about style. As all your writers have their own distinct style the translations of their writing have to be done very carefully. You’ll need to think long and hard about whether you want your translated publication to have the same style as your original one.

Certain turns or phrase may get “Lost in Translation” if they don’t exist in the target language or country of your publication. So, it may be that your publication has to be modified to suit your target market. This is a very delicate process which our team of project managers along with the translators can help you with.

Translating directly into your design

We pride ourselves in being able to work with any type of file format. So if your publication is Word, QuarkXpress, InDesign, an XML feed into your website or you have a bespoke content management system, your translation will be delivered in the exact format you need.

Translation Memory to save you time and money

So that your translations are as accurate as possible we use translation memory. This works by “remembering” passages of translated text in your publication and offering those translations to the translator when it sees a good match.

This works especially well with translation for publishing because of the large amount of translated text. Overtime this builds up and becomes more and more efficient and accurate. On top of all that it also means that we can hit tighter deadlines and save you money.

150 Languages and over 14,000 professional linguists

Professional international multilingual brand checking services

Marketing a new product or service is hard enough at the best of times. Choosing a name can take months for your brand and a whole lot of budget. Just imagine what would happen if after all that work, you found that you couldn’t market your product internationally because it had all kinds of issues.

Here are just a few of the possible pitfalls:
  • The name’s already in use
  • Your chosen brand name has an offensive meaning in your target country
  • The colours you have chosen are unlucky in the county of your launch
  • The brand name you’ve picked doesn’t translate well and the meaning is changed
  • Your product is culturally offensive

Lots of really big companies have already made these mistakes. The list is long – Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Fiat, Schweppes, Kentucky Fried Chicken.

All the hassle with marketing, PR, merchandising and production could have been saved if only they’d used our “International Brand Checking Service”.

International Brand Checking Service

The service is simple. We give ten in-country linguists a list of 20 questions about your brand or name, you can either supply them yourself or we have a standard set of questions you can use. Our multilingual staff go though the list and research the answers for you. All our brand checkers live in country so have an in-depth knowledge of the country and culture.

We’ll send all the completed questionnaires back to you to help you make your decision. If you then need further questions, we can help you with that too.

Transcription and translation

Transcription and translation of audio and video files in a whole host of file formats is something we are getting asked for more and more.

In a nutshell, transcription and translation involves our professional translators watching or listening to your recording and writing down the speech involved, in the same language as is being spoken. They then translate that text into the target language you require.

Probably the most common type of transcription and translation we seem to come across is for legal translation, when someone will be interviewed in their native language but the court will require this in another language. However, it’s becoming more common for transcription and translation to be required for video clips and radio interviews.

Translation charges

Clearly you don’t know how many words are used in your audio or video until they have been transcribed (it’s a chicken and egg thing), but we normally estimate that in English a recorded interview of 1 hour between 2 people would generate around 6000 spoken words, and a dictated piece of audio would generate between 8,000 and 10,000 spoken words.

These figures are based on English, but other languages such as German use longer words and so probably have less words per hour. Japanese, however, generally uses shorter words and therefore the spoken word count is likely to be higher.

What type of files can we transcribe?

We can use pretty much any type of file such as a tape, CD, DVD, video cassette (sorry, not Betamax), MP3, mpeg or wav. If you have used something we’ve not listed, drop us an email we’re bound to be able to help you.

Technical Translation you can trust

When translating technical documents it's essential that all the terminology is translated correctly. Taken to an extreme, technical translation can literally be the difference between life and death. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but imagine if a slight misinterpretation in an installation manual meant that wires were connected incorrectly.

That's why it's absolutely necessary that the translators working on your document have proven expertise in your field.

Using the correct language

For a translator working on a railway engineering text, for example, a plain and simple train transforms into a Pandora's box of terminological mix-ups:

  • Overhead line or contact wire?
  • Pantograph or current collector?

Finding the right technical name for train parts can be a daunting task even for a translator with an engineering background. Why? Because a current collector in electrical engineering becomes a pantograph in railway parlance.

A translator may boast of excellent language and engineering skills, but would be literally at a loss for words, unless they are familiar with technical jargon in both languages. To complicate matters, there are regional differences in names: A freight car in America becomes a wagon in England; a railcar refers to a diesel multiple unit (DMU) in Ireland.

Glossaries and translation memory

These examples for railway translation show that getting translations right isn't as easy as it may seem. There can be significant differences in English terminology between seemingly similar fields. To ensure that the correct language is used we will work with you to agree translated glossaries of terms specific to your company or industry.

We'll also use translation memory to ensure that paragraphs and sections of text which are repeated throughout your documents are re-used by our translators. Translation memory helps to increase quality and turnaround of your translations. It also helps with cost as previously translated text is charged at a reduced rate.

Quality controlled specialist translators

Whether it be aircraft, construction, agriculture or any other specialist subject, technical translation must be perfect. That's why we only use translators with a proven track record and solid technical understanding when working on technical documents.

We work with over 6,000 in-country translators from around the globe, giving us access to every conceivable type of industry specific knowledge All our translators are thoroughly checked to confirm their technical expertise.

We will always work with you, and where possible your in-country reviewers, to ensure that the style and knowledge of the translators involved meet exactly with your requirements. To ensure that the translations we deliver to you are as accurate as possible, we ensure that at every point in the translation process, quality checks are built in.
